  • created Canterbury university start shared services postgrad - despite no evidence for shared services 23 days ago.

Canterbury Christ Church University have shockingly decided to begin an 'academic' post graduate qualification in shared services. Shared services has no evidence to support it, apart from economies of scale. Unfortunately economies of scale is a myth. Here is some evidence and I invite Canterbury to provide some evidence for its course. Why do we believe in economies of scale? Economies of scale - a myth!
  • uploaded a PDF file: Why do we believe in economy of scale? about 1 month ago.

Professor John Seddon asks the question 'Why do we believe in economy of scale?' the answer is an uncomfortable reality that if confronted could transform the UK public sector. A must read for public sector and government leaders. For more see The Systems Thinking Review http://www.thesystemsthinkingreview.co.uk/

John Seddon at his funniest, most insightful and all with evidence.  Keep an eye out for Michael Barber as Mickey Mouse! :-)
  • uploaded a PDF file: Damage caused to the Independent Sector by the UK public sector commissioning regime 4 months ago.

The report outlines the impact of the commissioning regime on services in the independent sector. It shows how outsourcing, personalisation and targets have all caused damage. • shared a video: Video: John Seddon to Scottish Finance Committee 'When you learn to study & manage value you drive costs out of the system' 4 months ago.

Video of Professor John Seddon giving evidence to the Scottish Finance Committee began at 1:16:10  Compelling watching as it shows how groupthink of economies of scale, best practice and other such thinking is spread about by a compliance culture. When we study how the system performs from the customers perspective and gather evidence of this performance in the form of data, many of the myths of management are exposed.  If the embed doesn't work use the link below: http://news.bb...
  • uploaded a PDF file: Lean and Systems Thinking in the Public Sector in Wales 5 months ago.

Just wanted to share some academic research commissioned by the Welsh Audit Office and carried out by Cardiff University. Here's some of the blurb from the report. Cardiff University’s Lean Enterprise Research Centre (LERC) was commissioned to undertake an evaluation of systems thinking in the public sector on behalf of the Wales Audit Office as part of its programme focusing on efficiency and the constrained public sector financial environment. The Wales Audit Offic...
  • commented on Reflections on "Rethinking Lean Service" 10 months ago.

Hi Tim and Paul - It has massive implications and ramifications for management in service organisations. It is now possible to see why setting targets and all other arbitrary measures is so dumb, based upon no knowledge. The first political party to understand these management ideas will achieve a rather significant jump ahead in the polls as they engage everybody to achieve purpose.  Howard The Systems Thinking Review http://www.thesystemsthinkingreview.co.uk/

  • created Seddon on 'Rethinking Lean Service' about 1 year ago.

The government has rushed to adopt wholeheartedly the lean agenda, seeing quick cost savings with no real interest in the espousal of value.  John Seddon has a new podcast that explains where lean went seriously wrong. Partly because it treated services like factories. It is a seminal moment in the improvement world.   ITunes>Podcasts>search for The Systems Thinking Review>download & sign up comments and thoughts welcome Howard The Systems Thinking Review
  • created John Seddon attacked by Audit Commission about 1 year ago.

John seddon has been subjected to a personal attack by the Audit Commission for being critical and suggesting that millions of pounds could be saved by reining the Commission back.  John argued that the evidence that he, his colleagues and legion of systems thinkers have, provide clear evidence that targets and standards and inspection are ruining services and inhibiting learning.  Since then an ever-growing groundswell has been arguing John's case and agreeing that the Audit Comm...
  • created Counterintuitive knowledge: A systems view of Housing Management about 1 year ago.

The Systems Thinking approach to Housing Management is one that is currently contributing to massive increases in service quality in Housing Associations and Local Authorities across the United Kingdom. http://www.thesystemsthinkingreview.co.uk/index.php?pg=18&backto=1&utwkstoryid=166 Systems Thinking organisations consistently see that their old housing management problems dissolve, unlocking unimagined quality improvements at the same time as achieving jaw-dropping cost sav...

  • created Economy of Scale - It's a myth! about 1 year ago.

John Seddon introduces private sector clients who explain why they first tried and then rejected front office/back office shared services. They explain that the thinking and assumptions, based upon economies of scale, are flawed, and a better set of assumptions are economies of flow. This is important evidence that will save public sector organisations millions of pounds, and huge volumes of time and effort. See the video at the Systems Thinking Review
  • edited Systems Thinking and the Case Against Benchmarking about 1 year ago.

Systems Thinkers know that benchmarking is the wrong thing to do. In effect copying, it undermines learning. And yet this is at odds with the Audit Commission and the concept of beacon councils. Paul Buxton argues that whilst benchmarking sounds like a plausible method for improving service, actually it harms service quality and hampers learning. Learning with good method allows for real learning to be focused upon your own systems. Read the article here.
