"The source of America's prosperity has never been merely how ably we accumulate wealth, but how well we educate our people": Obama's remarks on education reform

last updated about 1 year ago, 0 Comments

This morning, on his 50th day in office, President Barack Obama delivered an impressive speech on education reform at the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce’s 19th Annual Legislative Conference. Here is the transcript in full (thanks to my colleague Richard Halkett). Worth reading. PRESIDENT OBAMA: Thank you. (Applause.) Si se puede.AUDIENCE: Si se puede! Si se puede! Si se puede!PRESIDENT OBAMA: Thank you. Thank you so much. Please, everybody have a seat. Thank you for the wonderful in...

Insurgent parents - scary stuff?

last updated about 1 year ago, 0 Comments

If you are a teacher or an education policy maker, this story from the US will be very unsettling.. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/01/29/AR2009012904176.html?wpisrc=newsletter&wpisrc=newsletter&wpisrc=newsletter Headed "well connected parents take on school boards", it catalogues a number of instances where parents have harnessed the social web and other online campaigning tools to challenge, and in some cases overthrow the decisions of local school superi...

Web 2.0 Education

last updated about 1 year ago, 2 Comments

CISCO has an enormous opportunity in innovating in curriculum using Web 2.0 technology to enhance inquiry learning by students. This potential in my view is largely un-tapped. The United States has fallen into a knowledge telling mode of learning in its No Child Left Behind educational strategy, with the result being that many children may find it hard to compete in the emerging cognition based knowledge economy. Creating a cadre of teacher users who will conduct inquiry learning an...

One-to-One Computing: Is this the Best Option for Learners?

last updated about 1 year ago, 0 Comments

Here is  link to a point of view recently published by the IBSG education team on which comment and critique are most welcome. cisco-point-of-view-on-one-to-one-computing.pdf  It seems to me that computing policies are too often made without reference to a sound model for education trasnformation that will really prepare learners for life and work in an increasingly global society. There are many commentators who talk about the fact that learners are hyper-social animals who want their forma...

Content through Collaboration

last updated about 1 year ago, 2 Comments

I have just been reading a very timely article by John Seely Brown and Richard P Adler about ‘social learning’. My reading coincided with a recent discussion I had with a colleague, Lee Simpson, about the use of VLEs in higher education. We both see VLEs being used primarily as repositories for lecture notes; for posting PowerPoint slides, or for turning acetates into electronic documents – all no more than putting books online. Academics are still the guardians of content.  This is the wors...

The Road Not Traveled: Education in MENA

last updated about 1 year ago, 3 Comments

Anyone with an interest in education in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) should download and read a recent report from the World Bank entitled: The Road Not Traveled - Education Reform in the Middle East and Africa. Indeed, anyone with an interest in the development of education globally will find much to think about here.Like any report from the World Bank, this paper is replete with an incredibly rich and fascinating mass of statistics as well as formidable analysis of social and eco...

Reflections on India

last updated about 1 year ago, 3 Comments

I have just returned from a 5-day trip to Amber, near Jaipur in Rajasthan, India. I flew to Delhi then took a four-hour car drive to Amber - this was my first taste of India. I have already travelled to Africa, Pakistan and the Middle East and my snapshot of India leaves me puzzled, the people, especially the women, as so colourful but this is contrasted by, for example, mountains of litter, people urinating and abject poverty. You quickly get used to camels pulling carts, elephants carrying...
